Trees, Woodland and Forest Walks in Scotland, North East

Aberdeenshire, Morayshire and Banffshire – is particularly blessed with trees, woodland and forests which are accessible to the public. Here are a few suggestions on where to go to enjoy the splendour and tranquillity of trees by walking in woodland areas.

North East Scotland Tree Woodland and Forest Walks

  • TYREBAGGER WOODS – mid-way between Aberdeen and Kintore. These woods have been a centre for research into Continuous Cover as an alternative approach to Clearfelling, a tree services project which is funded by the Forestry Commission’s Regeneration and Sustainable Silviculture Programme. Epic Tree Care – a team of experienced professional tree surgeons based in Keith, Banffshire – are proud to have been involved in this experimental work at Tyrebagger Woods.
  • Between Turriff and Cuminestown lies DELGATY WOODS, not far from Fraserburgh. The Song Birds Trail in particular lets you enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this mossy-floored larch and pine forest with plenty of mature trees.
  • On the outskirts of Cullen is CRANNOCH WOOD WALK. At the highest point you will have a wonderful view of the Bin Hill, part of Cullen and the  bay across to Portknockie.
  • LOSSIE FOREST stretches from Lossiemouth towards Kingston at the mouth of the River Spey. There are many forest tracks leading from the car park towards the beach, and hidden amongst the trees are relics of World War II defences.
  • SCOTLY at Banchory on Deeside. There are walks through tall Larch and Scots Pine trees which are particularly popular with families. You can climb Scolty Hill for panoramic views over Royal Deeside and the Grampian Mountains.
  • Not far from Elgin, close to Pluscarden Abbey, is MONAUGHTY WOOD with magnificent Douglas Fir & Scots pines and spectacular views to the Moray Firth.
  • Near Forres is HILL OF MULUNDY, a Forestry Commission Scotland wood which welcomes visitors to their trails to enjoy the trees and woodland.
  • ROSEISLE COASTAL FOREST is a great place to walk amongst sweet-smelling pinewood trees. Roseisle is between Burghead and Findhorn.
  • BACK O’ BENNACHIE provides atmospheric and peaceful woodland trails near Inverurie, towards Oyne. Intriguing sculptures create discussion points along the way.
  • COYNACHIE is an area of new woodland created between Huntly and Dufftown and near Rhynie. In 2006, a new Guinness World Record was made for tree planting at Coynachie –18,124 trees were planted in just forty minutes!
