What is a tree surgeon?

A tree surgeon (also known as an arborist) is a highly trained professional involved in the management and care of trees. They have specialised training in the fields of tree pruning, tree removal and stump removal as well as in the treatment of various diseases and infestations that affect trees. Why do I need a tree surgeon?

The UK has some of the world’s most restrictive laws governing the treatment of trees. But beyond invoking the wrath of regulatory agencies, pruning and felling trees is dangerous work. Many people have been seriously hurt attempting to fell trees on their own, and many others have wound up causing damage to their own or other people’s property because of inadequate training.

Do I need permission from the local authority to work on my trees?

It depends. But given the number and complexity of tree care regulations in the UK it is always a safe bet to assume you will need permission from some governing body in order to prune, move or fell a tree, even if it is on your own property. Nothing is wasted in that all branches are either turned into logs or we put them through our chipping machine and create wood chips to use as a landscaping element. If you wish to keep any logs created from trees pruned or felled on your property simply let us know ahead of time and we will be happy to turn them over to you.

Can anyone become a tree surgeon?

In theory, yes. However, some people are more suited to being tree surgeons than others. For example: a tree surgeon needs to be in excellent physical shape because they are going to spend a good portion of their working life climbing trees and working with chainsaws while high above the ground. And speaking of high above the ground… They also need to have no fear of heights. They must also love the outdoors and have the ability to remain calm under pressure.
