Elm – Board

Elm is sadly in the final stages of dying out in Britain due to Dutch elm disease and becoming increasing rare. There was historically a glut of this timber, but this is reducing annually as we start to run out of trees. The timber will be sorely missed once gone as it exhibits a beautiful, often figured deep brown grain, with occasional hints of greens and blues. Traditionally used for a wide range of specialties ranging from wooden water pipes to wagon wheel hubs (due to its interlocking grain), in modern day it is more often used for chair bases. Elm is one of our most popular and beautiful timbers and while sometimes not the easiest to work with due to the figuring disrupting the grain direction (perhaps not ideal for your first woodworking project), it is well worth the extra effort for the finish and appearance you can pull from the timber.
