Ash – Board

Ash is a hardwood which is currently one of the most common, but we expect to become vanishingly rare in the UK as Ash Dieback spreads through killing the trees. As a timber it is a stable, even grained, easy to work medium density hardwood. Occasionally showing figured grain, with a strong contrast between the light sapwood and dark heartwood ensuring pieces made with “straight across” timber will be very visually striking and unusual. Ash showing the heartwood is referred to as olive ash due to its similarity to Mediterranean olive wood. Traditionally popular for sporting, farming, boat building and construction equipment due to its flexibility and strength, it was also highly prized for furniture making, often used in Windsor chairs and contemporary pieces.
