3 Effective Ways to Remove a Tree Stump After Felling a Tree

There are more ways you can try if none of these appeal but, in our experience, these 3 methods are the most effective and convenient:

  • Dig It Out – If you don’t have many tools but you do have plenty of time, digging out a tree stump is one method you might like to consider. You’ll need to excavate all around the stump to expose the roots, which then need to be severed. The goal is to keep digging until the tap root is exposed. Once this has been severed, the stump can be prised from the earth and taken away. Depending on the size and location of the stump, this method can take half a day or more (12 hours of digging) to complete so it’s not one for the faint-hearted or physically infirm.
  • Burn It – If you have a power drill and know how to use it, you could burn the stump and get rid of it considerably faster and with considerably less effort too. The first thing you need to do when following this method is to drill a number of holes in the stump. Fill the holes with paraffin, set the stump alight and retreat to a safe distance. If you’ve got it right, the stump will burn to ashes and you can simply sweep it away or leave nature to clear up for you afterwards.
  • Grind It into Sawdust – In our experience, this is the fastest, safest and most convenient way to get rid of tree stumps after a tree is felled, either on purpose or due to local weather conditions. The main drawback, as far as amateurs are concerned, is the need for specialist equipment and training. If you would like to have your stump ground to fine woodchips or sawdust but you cannot justify the cost of a new stump grinding machine or you don’t know how to use one safely, please take our advice and contact a local tree surgeon instead. It’s simply not worth taking any chances with potentially dangerous machinery.

If you are not confident in your ability to complete the job safely or you don’t have the time, hire an experienced professional to do it instead. If you’re in North East Scotland, Epic Tree Care will be delighted to take care of all your tree removal requirements.
